The basics
What's the difference between sports massage and neuromuscular therapy?
Traditional "sports massage" is a broad category — circulation, warmup, recovery, general tightness. Clinical neuromuscular therapy (NMT) is an advanced discipline that uses precise manual techniques to address specific muscle restrictions, trigger points, and compensations that drive pain and limit performance. At Organic Mechanics, what we call "sports massage" is really clinical NMT applied to athletes — same depth, far more specificity. It's the difference between someone rubbing your sore leg and someone finding the exact reason your leg is sore.
Is this like a spa massage?
No. A spa massage is a relaxation experience. Clinical NMT is a therapeutic treatment. Both have their place — this is the second one. If you come in looking for a candlelit hour of easy pressure, you'll be disappointed. If you come in because something in your body isn't working right, we'll probably help you fix it.
Who should book?
Athletes of any level, weekend warriors, people rebuilding from injury, people with chronic pain that regular massage hasn't fixed, desk workers with posture issues that are now causing pain. The common thread isn't "elite athlete" — it's "wants to actually solve a soft-tissue problem."
Sessions & scheduling
How long is a first session?
Your first visit is a 60-minute session. It includes a full clinical assessment plus targeted treatment — history, postural screen, range-of-motion tests, palpation, and hands-on work.
Why are follow-up sessions only 30 minutes?
Because NMT is precise work. Once we've done the assessment and we know what's driving the problem, 30 minutes of focused treatment is more effective than an hour of generic pressure. Most athletes tell us the 30-minute follow-ups accomplish more real change than the 60- and 90-minute spa massages they've had elsewhere. No filler. No wasted time.
How many sessions will I need?
Acute issues (less than 4 weeks old) typically resolve in 1–3 sessions. Chronic patterns that have been around for years typically need 4–6 sessions to retrain, plus periodic maintenance. We tell you honestly where we expect you'll land after the first assessment — not a hard sell.
How often should I come in?
For an active issue: once a week until it resolves. For in-season maintenance: every 2–4 weeks depending on training load. For off-season or general maintenance: every 4–6 weeks. We'll recommend the right cadence for your situation.
Can I book for a specific race or tournament?
Yes. See our Pre-Event / Post-Event page for the full timing guide. Short version: last deep session 5–7 days before, optional flush 2–3 days before, recovery session 24–48 hours after.
Cost, payment & insurance
How much does a session cost?
Session pricing is listed on the booking page at organic-mechanics.com/book.html. We keep it in line with clinical sports massage pricing in the Upstate — and well under the out-of-pocket cost of comparable out-of-network PT work.
Do you take insurance?
We don't currently bill insurance directly. We can provide a receipt (superbill) for you to submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement under out-of-network benefits. HSA and FSA cards are typically accepted for clinical bodywork like NMT — check with your plan administrator to confirm coverage.
What's your cancellation policy?
24-hour notice is appreciated — it lets us offer the slot to another athlete who needs it. Life happens; we're reasonable. Repeated last-minute cancellations will eventually affect your ability to rebook.
What to expect
Is it going to hurt?
Clinical NMT is precise, not punishing. Some spots will be tender — that's part of finding the problem. We work with you, not against you. Constant communication during the session is part of the process. The goal is productive intensity, not a pain tolerance test. If something is too much, tell us and we adjust immediately.
What should I wear?
Whatever you're comfortable in. Athletic wear is fine. We work around clothing when helpful and with traditional draping when that serves the treatment better. It's always your call.
Will I be sore after?
Sometimes, especially after the first session or after deep work. Usually it's the "good sore" — like after a hard workout — and it's gone in 24–48 hours. Stay hydrated, move gently, sleep. Don't schedule deep work the day before an event or competition.
What do you treat — just sports injuries?
No. We treat chronic pain, postural issues, TMJ, tension headaches, old injuries that never fully resolved, nerve impingement patterns, repetitive strain from work, and general "my body doesn't move the way it used to" complaints. The clinical approach is the same whether you're a pro athlete or a 55-year-old whose shoulder has been cranky for three years.
Medical & safety
Should I see a doctor before booking?
Yes — for any acute injury, significant swelling, bruising, unexplained severe pain, loss of function, or if you heard a pop. We want a diagnosis first so we know what we're working with. No — for chronic issues, old injuries, performance concerns, postural pain, or general tightness. We'll refer out if we find something that needs medical evaluation.
Do you work with physical therapists?
Yes — often. NMT and PT complement each other beautifully: PT handles exercise prescription and motor learning, NMT handles the soft-tissue piece. We're happy to coordinate with your physical therapist, chiropractor, or sports medicine physician if you want us to.
When should I NOT book?
If you have an active infection, fever, recent surgery without medical clearance, uncontrolled blood pressure, a blood clot, or an unhealed fracture — don't book until cleared. If you're pregnant, mention it so we can adjust positioning and approach. If you're unsure, call us and we'll tell you straight.
